Andrews commissioners will sign resolution opposing high-level nuclear waste storage

A packed Special Meeting held by the Andrews County Commissioners’ Court on July 15, 2021 resulted in a vote to draft up a resolution against the interim storage of high-level nuclear waste in Andrews County.

Dozens of residents spoke at the meeting, with a large showing of Waste Control Specialists employees and local residents in opposition. Currently WCS is the minority stakeholder in the Interim Storage Partners company, and representatives from the other stakeholder were not present at the meeting.

Locals voiced their concerns on the economic impact of high-level nuclear waste in their community, the risks associated with human error, and questioned what was the true benefit to bringing HLW to Andrews. While WCS employees praised their company, there was little talk from their side about the actual safety and economic benefits of the plan.

The Commissioners all spoke on the fact that overwhelming numbers of their constituents opposed the plan and they felt called to vote in opposition to the storage of HLW in the County. Next Tuesday the Court will meet during their regular session to sign the resolution.
