NRC Environmental Review of Holtec Interim Storage Site Delayed to November

The NRC, or Nuclear Regulatory Commission has announced on Jul 2, 2021 that the environmental report for Holtec International’s interim storage site for high-level nuclear waste will not be ready until November. Previously the NRC was expected to release the report by the end of July. A separate safety review is also delayed until May of 2022.

This is great news for opponents of the plan in New Mexico. The final licensing by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission cannot be granted until all environmental studies (officially called an EIS) are published.

Meanwhile in Texas, the Interim Storage Partners site in Andrews County is expected to receive the EIS from the NRC in July or August of 2021.
