Protect the Basin

An Initiative of the Permian Basin Coalition of Land & Royalty Owners and Operators

Say No to the Cross-Country Transport & Storage of the Nation’s High-Level Nuclear Waste

Our Mission

Our mission is to ensure our citizens are aware of the plans to transport deadly high-level waste across America’s cities and towns via rail and barge: all destined for the Permian Basin region of Texas and New Mexico.  It is our goal to protect the country and the Permian Basin from the threat of high-level nuclear waste.

We are calling on U.S. citizens to contact their local and state elected officials about the concerns associated with the transport and storage of high level nuclear waste.

Who We Are

PROTECT THE BASIN is an initiative of the Permian Basin Coalition of Land & Royalty Owners and Operators. We are working in the public interest by informing residents of the Permian Basin and those along the transportation route of the need to prevent the transport and interim storage of deadly high-level waste. Nothing on this scale has ever been attempted: transport across America’s cities and towns via rail and barge: all destined for storage in America’s most important oil patch until the Federal government comes up with a solution for America’s nuclear waste problem.

Why Protect the Basin

Up to 210,000 metric tons of the most deadly material on the planet will be transported by rail, highway, and barge from across the United State to our region known as the Permian Basin: West Texas and Southeastern New Mexico. It will wind up in Lea County, New Mexico and Andrews County, Texas for at least forty years or until a permanent storage solution is available.

Our country’s greatest sunsets are found in the Permian Basin: an area encompassing fifty-five counties spread across Texas and New Mexico. Here, ranching, farming, and oil and gas exploration have been our way of life. Our economy of energy production gives America its economic and national security. Nuclear waste is a risk to our ability to engage in ranching, farming, and oil and gas exploration. Not to mention the risks that nuclear waste accidents would have on our precious groundwater supply via the Ogallala Aquifer and the future health of local residents. This risk will not be taken lightly. Our aim is to protect the Permian Basin from the proposed threat of high-level nuclear waste.
